Baton Rouge Discovery Concert

Back on  October 25th, our homeschool group, Bayou Cajun Homeschoolers, went to the Baton Rouge Symphony Discovery Concert.  This is an annual event that take places on 2 different days for school groups to come and experience a taste of the symphony along with educational aspects.

IMG-20121025-01185 When they begin, the music director goes through each instrument sections teaching the kids which instruments are in each group (strings, percussion, brass, and woodwinds)  Also, someone from each instrument will play a short piece to allow the children to hear how each instruments sounds and is played.IMG-20121025-01188

Also, each song that was performed taught the children about how composers use different techniques to express a particular mood through the music.

Tabasco factory

After lunch at the park, we drove to Avery Island to tour the Tabasco plant.

In the store, you could sample different Tabasco products: sauces, ice cream, soda. The soda and jalapeno ice cream were very hot. The raspberry chipotle ice cream was really good.

The peppers are still hand picked and they use a petite baton rouge (little red stick) to tell which peppers are ripe enough to pick.

After watching a video of how Tabasco sauce is made, we got to see the packaging plant in operation.

These describe the process that the peppers go through to make the sauce.
